Sri Lanka established diplomatic relations with Belgium in 1953, making it one of the early European countries to establish ties with Sri Lanka then Ceylon, and later established formal relations with the European Union in 1962. As the Mission enjoys longstanding historical relations, it holds a vital role through its concurrent accreditation to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the European Union. Brussels' strategic political location as the heart of Europe gives a wide range of opportunities in the political, trade, economic, and development sectors. The European Union treats Sri Lanka as a key partner in South Asia, supporting the country through trade concessions like GSP+ and multilateral dialogues. Further, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Belgium has accredited to Luxembourg and the European Union.
