Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Belgium, Luxembourg & the European Union since January 2024

A member of the Sri Lanka Foreign Service, since January 2003. Prior to the current position Mr. Weerasena was Director General/Economic Affairs (Bilateral) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka from February 2022 to January 2024. 

Member of National Trade Negotiation Committee (NTNC) in respect of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and Preferential Trade Agreements (PTAs) of Sri Lanka. Board member - Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) and member of a number of committees/engagements of the Government’s Economic recovery and revitalised programme. 

Mr. Weerasena had previously served as the Deputy Chief of Mission/Embassy of Sri Lanka in Tokyo, Japan; Director/Policy Planning, Research & Human Resources Development of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Minister/Sri Lanka High Commission in Canberra, Australia; Director/Human Rights of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; First Secretary/Embassy of Sri Lanka in Tokyo, Japan and Second Secretary/Sri Lanka High Commission in New Delhi, India. 

Mr. Weerasena possess two Masters Degrees from the Australian National University/Australia; ‘Master of Diplomacy’ & ‘Master of Asia Pacific Studies’. He graduated from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura/Sri Lanka with a ‘Bachelor of Commerce’ and has a ‘Post Graduate Diploma in International Studies’ from the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS)/Sri Lanka. He qualified with an ‘Advanced Diploma in Financial Markets’ from Colombo Stock Exchange/Sri Lanka. Mr. Weerasena had completed Licentiate Qualification from the Institute of Chartered Accountants/Sri Lanka. He is proficient in English and with good knowledge in Japanese. Mr. Weerasena had secondary education at Ampitiya Berrewaerts College, Kandy/ Sri Lanka. 

His wife passed away in March 2023 and has a son and a daughter.
