In a display of faith, unity, and compassion, the Sri Lankan catholic and non-catholic community in Belgium gathered for a special Christmas Full Mass organised by the Embassy held on 21 December 2025 at the Sri Lanka Residence in remembrance of the victims of the recent Cyclone Ditwa. The service, attended by clergy, and members of the Sri Lankan diaspora, blended the traditional joy of Christmas with a solemn call for solidarity and healing.
As Sri Lanka continues to grapple with the aftermath of catastrophe that left a trail of loss - claiming lives, displacing families, and damaging infrastructure, the Mass served as a spiritual space for collective mourning, reflection, and renewed hope.
While welcoming the Sri Lankan community Ambassador Chandana Weerasena mentioned that Christmas is traditionally a celebration of joy, however, the Full Mass carried a deeper purpose to stand in solidarity with the families affected and to offer spiritual support for their healing and recovery. Further, called to stand with them in compassion and action.
Rev. Fr. Ranil Camilus and Rev.Fr. Anton Rohitha, who presided over the Mass, emphasized the profound meaning of celebrating Christmas that the message of Christmas extends beyond celebration — it is a call to symbolise love, generosity, and shared humanity. Prayed that the light of Christ brings the victims comfort, strength, and restoration.
The worship included special prayers for the deceased, blessings for survivors, and rescue workers and volunteers engaged in relief efforts. It also offered lighting of candles, a moment of silent reflection and floral tributes, honouring the memory of those who perished. During the Mass the choir sang hymns reflecting peace and hope.
Attendees were served with refreshments.
